Why I’m Ridin’ with Biden

Tomorrow morning, March 10, 2020, I’m going to wake up, get dressed, and drive to my polling place, where I will happily vote for Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination for president.

As much as I believe Bernie is an absolute disaster—and you know I do—this isn’t only about him. It’s not even mostly about him.

No, tomorrow is about saving this country.

Joe Has Experience

Tomorrow is about getting someone into the White House who knows what the hell they’re doing, because Trump and the GOP have spent the last several years trashing norms and dismantling the government from within, and rebuilding it is going to take a lot of work. Biden wasn’t just Obama’s VP for eight years, he was an accomplished Democratic senator for 36 years. He knows what he’s doing.

And when I say accomplished, that’s exactly what I mean. The Violence Against Women Act. One of the first climate change bills. Pushing the Obama administration toward embracing same sex marriage. Joe did all that. He enacted 42 bills in 36 years. That’s a damn good record.

Has he made mistakes? Yes. Because he’s human. Has he evolved on some issues? Of course, just like the rest of the party. The rest of the country. Times change. The man is 77 years old. I don’t want a president who can’t learn. As Muhammed Ali said, “A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted thirty years of his life.”

Joe is a Leader and a Team Player

We need a president with the ability to build coalitions. Joe has that. That’s why he’s been endorsed by, among others, previous candidates Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Cory Booker, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg, and former Rep. John Delaney. And let’s not forget Rep. Jim Clyburn, whose endorsement was key.

We need coalitions because that’s how things get done in a democracy. (Republic. Whatever.) For a bill to become law, it must first pass the House and the Senate. For that to happen, representatives and senators must believe it represents the interests of not only the US as a whole, but also their constituents. Coalitions matter much more than the individual.

Joe Has Solid Democratic Support

I’m also voting for Biden because he has the strongest support in the Black community (which is what led me to choose him when Kamala Harris dropped in the first place).

Black people are the heart of the Democratic Party. They are the group who consistently support winning Democratic candidates. I trust their judgment, because they have the most skin in the game. They know who’s solid. They know who can beat the opposition. They know who can knock Trump off what he thought would be his throne.

Joe Is a Good Person

And finally, we need a president who is not only solid and dependable, but also one who is decent, caring, kind. Joe Biden cares deeply about America and her people. The man who spoke these truths is a man who wants what is best for us.

I want out of this mess we’re in. I want to get back to where we were when Obama was president—and continue progressing even beyond that. I want kids out of cages. I want healthcare for everyone. I want racial and gender equality. I want equal rights for the LGBTQ community and access for people with disabilities. I want fairness and prosperity and peace, and I really fucking want to be able to not worry about what the US president is doing because I can safely assume he’s doing his job.

For all those reasons and more, I’m ridin’ with Biden. Please join me, Idaho, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, and Washington. Let’s do this. Let’s take our country back.
