No, the Long National Nightmare Isn’t Over

The whistleblower’s report has been declassified. It could be available for the public to read as early as this morning. It’s possible that we are watching this whole thing unravel in real time.

I don’t know what the GOP’s game is here. They might be trying for spin. McConnell might be ready to throw it in our faces: “yeah, we’re corrupt, nothing you can do about it.” (I doubt it, though. He’s a duplicitous, evil motherfucker, and The Big Scooby-Doo Reveal isn’t his style.) Shit might actually be falling apart mafia style as the mobsters all race to squeal on each other. Or they might be ready to sacrifice Trump because he’s outlived his usefulness to them and to Putin.

But it would be a grave mistake to think that Trump is the problem here. He’s a symptom. He hasn’t sold us out alone. Republicans have been lockstep with him since before his election, and they have been trying to get to this place for decades. They:

• Flat stole a Supreme Court seat. Two, actually.

• Voted to confirm every shitty appointee of Trump’s

• Actively participated in creating concentration camps at the border

• Actively worked to overturn our rights to bodily autonomy

• Worked to cement Dominionism—basically, Christian Sharia law

• Aided and shielded Trump at every turn

Someday, maybe even soon, Trump will be out of office. It might be tempting at that point to think, ah, our national nightmare is over. We can relax.

No, we can’t. The GOP is not going to give up that easily. There’s too much money and power in it. And some, like the definitely not self-hating closeted gay Pence, genuinely buy into the Christian Dominionist bullshit.

In general, this is a lifetime fight. Republicans play the long game and so must we. But specifically, right now, we need to keep up this backlash to get back everything that we have lost and then some. We desperately need to keep the House and retake the Senate and the presidency in 2020.

Our long national nightmare is always just waiting for us to fall asleep again. But we can beat it if we just stay awake.
